IMPORTANT Audition Details

Casting preference is given to 6th graders, but grades 3rd - 6th are encouraged to audition if interested!

Please review the rehearsal schedule as I will have ALL Students at 100% of the rehearsals. Some conflicts are to be expected, but I must know in advance BEFORE you accept your role please so that I can modify the rehearsal schedule! Thank you!

OUR GROWTH MINDSET PHILOSOPHY

Every role in a theater production—no matter how many lines or solos it has—is vital to the story being told and to the overall success of the show. Theater is a team sport. The lead characters can’t shine without the world built around them, and ensemble members, supporting roles, and non-speaking characters help create energy, depth, and believability on stage.

Our mission is to develop well-rounded performers which means all students will be required to sing, dance, and act. We pride ourselves on giving roles to help develop the skills they are lacking in order to get stronger as a performer. We are looking for students ages 8-15 that have an open mind and have a growth mindset about roles and their personal development. We believe that every student is a part of the TEAM that makes a production great! IF YOU ARE LOOKING TO AUDITION FOR ONE SPECIFIC ROLE - WE ARE NOT THE RIGHT THEATER COMPANY FOR YOU, AND KINDLY ASK THAT YOU DO NOT AUDITION.

Whatever your role, theater teaches valuable life skills that go far beyond performing. Students learn teamwork by supporting the scene and helping others look good, resilience by embracing a part that might feel less glamorous, and adaptability by reacting and responding naturally in character. They practice discipline through rehearsal, commitment to a group goal, and confidence in presenting themselves in front of an audience. Supporting roles are often require strong physical acting, focus, and creativity to communicate without relying on many lines.

These skills—listening, collaborating, taking direction, and showing up with a positive attitude—are the same ones that help in school, friendships, and future jobs. Theater is about telling a story together, and every part matters. When each actor takes pride in their role, the production comes alive in a way that no single “star” could achieve alone.

AUDITION INFORMATION

Auditions are being held on Tuesday September 8th and Wednesday September 9th after school. See the link at the bottom to sign up for a SLOT.

Everyone that auditions should plan on call-backs, which will be on Wednesday September 9th from 3:30pm - 4:45pm!

REVIEW ROLES

1. Please view/see this PDF to review the roles and the audition sides for Aladdin Jr.

2. As you review the script lines, keep in mind that you will be asked to read for one (or more) of them! (Memorized lines is impressive in an audition - hint, hint)

3. Select a song that you will sing for in your audition. Select the best 30-45 second “highlight” of the song to sing for your audition. PLEASE SELECT PART OF A SONG FROM ALADDIN JR.

4. Practice the song with the music tracks - HINT - the strongest auditions as those with the karoake track only and NOT with a vocal track where the vocalist is singing with the auditioner).

AUDITION FORMAT

Your initial individual audition is only 5 minutes long. Be ready to give lots of energy and excitement for your role! Auditions are done in person. Here is the format.

Actor Slate

An actor slate is a concise, clear introduction given at the beginning of an audition, which includes the following:

• Name

• Age / Grade

• Role(s) You Are Interested

• Title of Song you will be singing

Song

Please be sure to choose a song that showcases your vocal range, skill, and ability. If you need help figuring out the perfect song for your voice, you can visit one of our vocal instructors here at Music Pillars.

*** If you are interested in a singing role, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND you sing the song of the particular character(s) you are interested in. All in-person auditions will be provided with the same music tracks given above if choosing a song from the production. We will use the performance tracks which has NO words.

Readings

Actors will be given 1-2 sides to read from. We will provide the sides at the audition. Give us lots of energy and don’t be afraid to move around, use your body, whatever makes sense for that scene.

If you have practiced/memorized a particular side you can TELL US in auditions and read from what you have practiced. (Hint, Hint….you should click on these sides below and practice some of them BEFORE YOUR AUDITION!)

If you are serious about a particular few roles, we strongly encourage you to come prepared with having the sides memorized. It is not required, but it helps you stand out in a big way. These are the lines that we will use in your audition.

Callbacks

All students are invited to callbacks. See below for more details on the format for callbacks.

HOW DO WE EVALUATE YOUR AUDITION?

Great question! Here is the form that we use (we video-record all auditions so that we can look back on them as well).

PART 1

Group Singing

The Music Director will have you sing for one or more roles using music from the actual show. The Audition Music that we will use will be songs from the show. We encourage you to become familiar with the songs from the musical.

PART 2

Paired Readings and Singing

There will be additional readings with various cast member combinations. We will also have actors do some additional improvisation/acting to get a sense of the best possible role for them, as well as do some various pairing for readings and singing. ***NOTE: your student may or may not do a paired reading at callbacks.

Auditions - Offering & Acceptance of Roles

1. Offering of roles

1. We will contact families and cast members via email to offer them various roles in the show, and provide some more information about the role.

2. There will be an understudy show at DMP on Saturday May 8th at 10 in the tent, with the intention of performing most/all of the show with the understudies in their understudy role!

3. Accepting/Declining of Roles

   Families will be contacted via email with the role(s) their child has been offered. This email has links to formally accept or decline the role. Typically 24 hours to accept/reject their role, at which time we will make additional casting/role calls/decisions and continue until all the roles are filled.

IMPORTANT UPDATE - enrolling in this program for spring sing does have a one-time $250 cost this year if you decide to enroll!

To be transparent, this cost mainly has to do with Mr. Spurgiesz needing to hire staff at Music Pillars to “cover” for him while he stays after school at DMP.
